Prof. Haviva Pedaya to receive the 2018 Gershom Scholem Prize

Prof. Haviva Pedaya will be the 2018 recipient of the Gershom Scholem Prize forKabbalah Research. The prize is awarded every four years by The Israel Academy of Sciences and Humanities and the Gershom Scholem Foundation. The prize ceremony will be held in Jerusalem in February 2018.


Past recipients of the prize include: Prof. Yeshayahu Tishbi z"l, Prof. Moshe Idel, and Prof. Yehuda Liebes, some of the most illustrious Kabbalah scholars of the age. Winning this prize is an indication of Prof. Pedaya's status as one of the foremost Kabbalah researchers of her generation. 


Prof. Nili Cohen, President of the Israel Academy of Sciences and Humanities, wrote that the prize committee chose Prof. Pedaya, “because of your work and activities researching the Kabbalah and your expertise on various issues in the Kabbalistic sources. The prize committee wanted me to convey that they were especially impressed with your ability to detail the connection between the study of the culture and history of knowledge to central complicated questions in the religious sciences and other fields." 


Pedaya is a member of the Department of Jewish History and head of The J. R Elyachar Center for Studies in Sepharadi Heritage at BGU.
